Women of Wind River – Sheriff Sarah Carter

From Wind River Lawman by Lindsay McKenna, Book 6, Wind River Valley Series

Sarah Carter was born and grew up in Wind River Valley. Her father, the Sheriff of the county, kept law and order. She had joined the Marine Corps, been a part of law enforcement and wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. But the world had changed markedly and now, she was battling an incoming drug lord who was like a cancer in the county. And it was up to her to stop him once and for all.

Sheriff Sarah Carter was no pushover. Her father was Sheriff of Lincoln County where the Wind River Valley was located. She was born in the valley, a strong, resilient Wyoming woman. Her parents taught her service to all Americans was important. Helping others was bred into her from the time she was born. First, she volunteered to go into the US Marine Corps at age 18 to 22. While serving in dangerous Afghanistan, she got her degree in law enforcement. At age 22, she left the Marine Corps and headed home to Wind River where she became a deputy under her father’s tutelage. Her father retired when she was 27, and Sarah moved into politics and was voted in as Sheriff for the county.

Battling an incoming drug lord from Guatemala, her deputies and she were stretched to the max in the wild back country and the mountains bracketing the valley. She works tirelessly on behalf of the citizenry, putting her life on the line every day, as did her heroic men and women deputies. Falling in love wasn’t on her radar until she put an ad in the newspaper for a wrangler with medical skills. Thinking no one would qualify to help her aging but spry grandmother who needed full time help she could no longer give her, Sarah reluctantly listed the ad.

When a man answered the ad, she was wary. What wrangler had the kind of medical skills she needed? When Dawson Callahan, a Texas wrangler, walked into her life, he was larger than life in her eyes. With a boyish grin, a calm demeanor and a good sense of humor, he won her over. Having him living with her crusty old grandmother, was a blessing in disguise. She didn’t want to be drawn to the quiet, highly alert cowboy. He too, had been in the US Navy as a combat medic, so he knew his business, no question.

When a situation that came out of nowhere confronted them, Sarah discovered just how much of a combat vet he really was. Both of them had left the war in Afghanistan, but now, there was a war burgeoning in the county and Sarah had to address it head on.  This time, however, she had back up: a hardened Texas wrangler, Dawson Callahan, who was a deadly tactician and strategist. Along the way, he stole her heart. And with her menacing law enforcement business, falling in love wasn’t for the faint of heart.
